The Shallows, What the Internet Is Doing with Our Brains
by Nicholas Carr Think On These Things
Reviewed by Gary Gilley

Nicholas Carr has written a fascinating book on the effect of the internet on lives and, in particular, our way of thinking.  The author's thesis is that modern technology, especially the internet, is rerouting our brains (p. 77), changing the way we think (p. 18) and the way we read (p. 90), is designed to divide our attention (pp. 115-116, 136-143, 194) train us to multitask (pp. 113-114), and "pay attention to crap" (pp. 142).  Carr contends that net reading is, by design, distracting and superficial; it seizes our attention only to scatter it (pp. 115, 118).  Thus large chunks of information is gained at the expense of concentration, contemplation (p. 5), and linear thinking (p. 10).  Google, for example wants to digitize all information including books (pp. 152, 163), but has designed its system such that the reader moves from site to site quickly.   The more clicks the better.  "The last thing the company wants is to encourage leisurely reading or slow, concentrated thought.  Google is, quite literally, in the business of distraction" (p. 157). The Shallows  confirms Marshall McLuhan's now popular observation, "The medium is the message" (p. 2).  That is, the internet is not just another way of gathering information, reading, or being entertained.  It has become the message and is rapidly changing everything.

Francis Chan Says He Rejects Prosperity Gospel, Yet Promotes and Fellowships with the Worst of Them
at Forgotten Word, 3/1/19

Act Note: This story is taken from a hyper-Calvinist site which we do not agree with.  But it illustrates again that Francis Chan tries to play both sides of the street while hanging out with the worst of heretics from Bethel Church, etc.

Eugene Peterson's Mixed MESSAGE: A Subversive Bible for a New Age (Booklet)
by Warren B. Smith LT Publishing

Eugene Peterson placed great emphasis on being-in his own words-"subversive." In a 1987 interview with Christianity Today, Peterson stated: So what I have tried to develop first of all, in myself, is the mentality of the subversive.2 "The Subversive Pastor" is the title of a chapter in his book The Contemplative Pastor (1989). Subversive Spirituality is the title of a book he released in 1994 while he was writing The Message. And if anyone doubts Peterson being a bit subversive, one need only look at his enthusiastic endorsements of three books with serious New Age implications-William Paul Young's The Shack, Rob Bell's universalistic Love Wins, and Sue Monk Kidd's When the Heart Waits. But many people would say-"So what? His Message translation has won the praise of everyone from Bono to Beth Moore to Billy Graham." But while Peterson delights many believers with what has been described as his "exegetical deftness," he has also introduced a lot of leaven-some of it decidedly New Age. And it is Peterson himself who warns-"And please don't toss this off as insignificant. It only takes a minute amount of yeast, you know, to permeate an entire loaf of bread" (Galatians 5:9 MSG). It is because of leaven-particularly New Age leaven-that Peterson's Message is a spiritually dangerous mixed Message.

Christianity - entering the danger zone
by Mike Oppenheimer, 3/3/19 Let Us Reason

Some are oblivious to the current state the Church is in, others ask how did this happen. Why is there such a proliferation of false teachers in the church? Putting aside Bible prophecy being fulfilled, we, the church have enabled them, even encouraged them because they receive little or no consequences to their blatant false teaching. One needs to be careful whom they choose as teachers they learn from. The first line for detection is who they claim Jesus is. Is he God come in the flesh? Some claim he is God but say he came as a man not God, which means the incarnation of God is missing. There are those who are saying Jesus is the eternal God but came to earth as a man (Bill Johnson) He emptied Himself of His divinity and became a man. Or he never claimed to be deity (Copelands) "Jesus didn't come as God, he came as a man" (Creflo Dollar and Kenneth Copeland) Jesus affirmed his deity constantly, by his action and by the Scripture being fulfilled. He said he came from above, by the very term "The Son of God" it means he has the same nature as his Father. (the "only begotten" being unique, the only man who is God) God can't stop being God in any way. Mal.3:6 "I the Lord do not change" William Branham taught, "He lived as a man until He was baptized by John, at Jordan." "He was Jesus when He was born. But when the Holy Ghost came upon Him after His baptism, He was anointed with God. God was in Him."
