Christians who "turn away" by Sandy Simpson
Jeremiah 3:10-11 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD. And the LORD said unto me, "The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah." (KJV) Israel had turned away from the Lord and had gone after the gods of Canaan, namely Baal and Asherah. Because Israel had prostituted herself with false gods in worshipping the polytheistic gods that started at Babel, God had declared He was divorcing Israel and would send them into exile until they again returned to the true God. But Judah prided itself in doing what God had commended as they had Jerusalem and the Temple. They disdained Israel for setting up altars to Baal and Asherah poles on high hills. Yet God was not fooled by Judah's pretence. In the KJV it says they were not worshipping God with their whole heart but "feignedly".

by Jim Jenkins, 8/8/16
Here is what I gleaned from this brief study. To contend for the faith once for all delivered to the saints is arduous, and frankly agonizing at times. What I/we need to guard against, however, is the tendency to adopt an attitude of combativeness with others in order to arrive at the truth. I don't want to be a brawler. I don't want to be 'that guy.' I don't intend to ever back down, but I can pray, even agonize in prayer... that I contend for something rather than against someone.

World Vision's Gaza Manager Funneled Millions to Hamas: Israel |
at Understand The Times, 8/12/16
Israel has accused a manager working for U.S.-headquartered Christian charity World Vision of funneling millions of dollars to Islamist militant group Hamas. Mohammad El Halabi was arrested by Israel on June 15 while crossing the border into Gaza, World Vision said in a statement. He was charged by Israeli authorities on Thursday. He had run the organization's Gaza operations since 2010. According to Israel's Shin Bet security service, El Halabi diverted around $7.2 million of World Vision money to Hamas each year. That is the equivalent of 60 percent of the charity's total annual funding for Gaza. Click here to read this article! |
What could be wrong with learning to "hear God's voice"? |
by Spirit of Error, 8/15/16
The problem with learning to hear God's voice, in the NAR manner, is that people are being taught to turn to a subjective impression instead of the objective truth of God's Word. As an example of this type of teaching, I share this link to an audio recording of a talk titled "Hearing God's Voice." It was given recently at Tree of Life Church in Palmer, Alaska, and is representative of similar talks being given at churches throughout the nation. During this particular talk, the speaker, Shannon Johnson, leads attendees in a series of "activation" exercises-i.e., activities designed to help individuals learn how to hear God speak to them directly. The audio is lengthy, so I've noted time stamps where specific teachings begin alongside my comments about those teachings. I didn't list everything I'm concerned about, but just brief highlights. There's a lot more that's disturbing in this audio than I will mention here.

at The Berean Call, 8/16/16
Our friend Bacon [a liberal minister], who in his attempt to get rid of the jawbone with which Samson slew a thousand Philistines, made him use the hill of Lehigh as his weapon, tries his hand on many of the miracles of the Old Testament. Here is his attempt on the miracle at the Red Sea: The strong wind drives back the shallow water till Israel is able to ford the narrow gulf. On the farther shore the battle takes place between them and their pursuers, who are embarrassed by the returning tide and finally turn to "flee against it," leaving their dead upon the seashore. We are astonished that after the lapse of more than three thousand years this gentleman, living near Boston, should know so much more about this remarkable event than the man who wrote Exodus. He knows that instead of going through the sea on "dry ground," as that author says, the Israelites forded the gulf; and he has learned that at that place it was a " narrow gulf." He has learned, what that author did not know, that a battle was fought between Israel and the Egyptians, and that it was fought after both armies had safely forded the sea. He agrees with Exodus, that the Egyptians were "embarrassed" (slightly so, we suppose) by the returning tide, and finally turned to "flee against it;" but he claims that the only dead they left were those killed in a battle on the farther shore - the rest, notwithstanding the slight "embarrassment" caused by the returning tide, got back in safety to their own side of the narrow gulf. This is about the way in which infidels rewrote sacred history in the days of Voltaire. It is the way in which reverend critics, with D.D. at the end of their names, rewrite it now. - J.W. Garvey (March 1, 1829 - October 6, 1911, minister, author, and religious educator in the American Restoration Movement)
