Bill Johnson Quotes

Compiled by and commented on by Sandy Simpson

The false teachings of Bill Johnson of Bethel Church, Redding, CA are too many to cover in a single article.  I have commented on many of the heresies of leaders at Bethel as well as those who endorse them in a number of DVD productions including:

"Holy Ghost Reborn" is the second film in the "Holy Ghost" series released by Bethel Church in Redding, CA.  Tim Wirth and I reviewed the first "Holy Ghost" film and that review is freely available on YouTube here:

I am sorry to say this but Bethel is clearly a cult of Christianity holding to most of the teachings of the Latter Rain and Word of Faith.  They have demonstrated repeatedly a manipulative atmosphere targeting young people in particular while preaching rank heresy.  This new film is a continuation of those false teachings and practices.  I pray for the young people in that church that they will come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior and thus come to know the true Holy Spirit.

In this article, I will detail some false ideas, especially from Johnson’s books.

Good Vibrations

The comment has been made at Bethel that the Beach Boys had it right when they sang about “good vibrations” and that the New Age has many concepts right that have been stolen by the enemy and counterfeited.  The fact is that Bethel teaches many New Age ideas as fact and puts out false prophecies to “corroborate” them.

All of the contributors to chapters in this book sense that God is on the verge of releasing something new on the earth and that new thing somehow involves vibrations, frequencies, energy, sound, light, and taking “quantum leaps” by faith. In this chapter, Bill Johnson shares how we already own in the present what is not yet. And, because of our inheritance in Christ, we can reach into God for what has been reserved for tomorrow and pull it into our today. (Bill Johnson, The Physics of Heaven, Chapter 16: Pulling the Tomorrows of God into Today, http://heavensphysics.com/chapter16/)

The idea of some sort of sound that will be heard and cause people to get saved is borrowed from New Age books and Maitreya.  “Quantum” faith sounds so postmodern and hip but is not a biblical concept.  Applying faith is not some scientific exponential magic.  It is simply trusting and obeying Jesus Christ.  Check out the similarity between what Benjamin Crème “channeled” supposedly from Maitreya and “prophets” in conjunction with Bethel and the New Apostolic Reformation have prophesied about a “sound” coming:

There’s a new sound coming. We began having prophecies in 1995 that there is a new sound coming, a new heavenly sound. It’s going to come in everything and it’s especially going to come in praise. A couple of times recently, only for a little bit, I’ve been in beautiful praise when all of a sudden a new sound comes that I’ve never heard before. It’s like it sets you on fire. The new sound is a string instrument, a wind instrument. So there’s a new sound coming. (Bob Jones, The Physics of Heaven, Chapter 3: Vibrating in Harmony with God, http://heavensphysics.com/chapter3/)

Benjamin Crème “prophesied” or more accurately “channeled” as a message from Maitreya (the antichrist) that stated as follows:

Q. How do we know 'your' Christ is who you say he is and how do we know he is not someone who is trying to obtain some form of powerful position in the world with the purpose of world domination? BC: This is a question often put to me by fundamentalist Christians. A tree is known by its fruit, and the Christ must be known by his words, his deeds, and, above all, his energy. If one man could achieve world domination (which, in today's world, I very much doubt) then it could only be someone of the stature of the Christ. The fundamentalists, of course, are afraid that Maitreya might be the anti-christ, with which fallacy I have dealt many times, here and elsewhere. On the Day of Declaration, I submit, everyone -- even the fundamentalists -- will know, through the overshadowing of the minds of all humanity -- a Pentecostal experience for all -- that Maitreya is the Christ." (The "Overshadowing" Of Maitreya Will Be A "Pentecostal Experience For All"  by Benjamin Creme, Share International F.A.Q.,1999, http://www.deceptioninthechurch.com/maitreya8.html)

We are now entering the age of Light. The Hierarchy is training scientists through experiences of phenomenal powers by demonstrating the use of the science of light to achieve transfiguration, transportation, and communication. All living cells are interconnected, with Light between them. Every atom is interconnected with the Light. The time will come when we can transform this light, and then it will be possible to dematerialize the body. Adepts and Masters can do this, and one day, Maitreya says, we will be able to do it. Matter can be transported from one place to another through the light. Thus the astral body of one who has departed can materialize. Even now scientists are being taught how to materialize through the technology of light so that objects can be transmitted from one part of the world to another. This technology -- using colour, sound, and vibration -- is the science of the 21st century. It will make society more prosperous and happy. People will enjoy life more, many diseases will be healed instantaneously. This is the power of light. In time, scientists will be able to understand these processes, these laws of nature.  (July/August 1990 issue of Share International magazine (Volume 9, Number 6, A COMPILATION OF TEACHINGS FROM THE WORLD TEACHER, MAITREYA THE CHRIST, http://www.deceptioninthechurch.com/maitreya4.html)

Even the most devout atheist will be hard pressed to be able to ignore Maitreya's 'signs' and 'miracles'. For instance, on the much-vaunted 'Day of Declaration', it's said that Maitreya's voice will be heard by everyone on the planet, in their own language.  (The Final Equinox 2000..., Dan Millar, http://www.deceptioninthechurch.com/TheFinalEquinox.html)

New Agers claim the same thing:

"... an UNCONTROLLABLE joy will ripple through the thinking layer of the earth...From within, all sensitive persons will feel the joy of the FORCE, flooding their systems with love and attraction." (Barbara Hubbard states that Christ gave her this description of the promised "Planetary Smile".)

In the end, this is all just “manifestations” of a god that is not the God of the Bible, but a cosmic “pantheistic” god, though the “god” behind this all is the enemy and he is not a god nor pantheistic.  It is simply setting people up to ultimately follow the antichrist.

Dominionism

He intends to fill the earth with His glory, and His glorious bride will play a role. (Bill Johnson, The Physics of Heaven, Chapter 16: Pulling the Tomorrows of God into Today, http://heavensphysics.com/chapter16/)

Yes, God will fill the earth with His glory at the Second Coming and for a thousand years in the Millennial Kingdom.  Yes, the bride of Christ will return with Jesus in the coming Kingdom to judge the nations and angels.  But no, God is not going to do that now.  For now, the Dominion has been given over to the enemy and true Christians must continue the Great Commission, thereby helping to establish Christ’s spiritual Kingdom where people believe and are born again.  But we are not here to “save the planet” or establish the physical Kingdom of God here on earth.  Jesus Christ will do that when He comes.  “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

Bill Johnson believes Christians can bring into being today the millennial prophecies that God’s Word tells us will occur when Jesus returns.

If it’s true that the promises of restored cities and healed nations are actually millennium promises…and if the promise of God’s glory being manifest all over the earth is far off into the future…and if in fact the people of God will not reach a place of true maturity, living like one mature man—then I must ask the question—is there anyone hungry enough for what He has shown us in the Scriptures that we will pull into our day something that is reserved for another? Is there anyone willing to lay themselves down to bring more of God’s promises across another great divide? If you can see God’s coming future promises, and He hasn’t blinded your eyes to His intent, then He is hoping to hook you into the role of calling “into being that which does not exist.” It is the role of the desperate heart of faith. We have the opportunity to affect the direction and flow of history through our prayers and intercessions. This is where we take hold of the future. This is why He wants to show us, “things to come.” The future is now, and it belongs to us. (Bill Johnson, The Physics of Heaven: Exploring God’s Mysteries of Sound, Light, Energy, Vibrations, and Quantum Physics, ed. (Crossville, TN: Double Portion Publishing, 2012), p. 178.)

There is no provision for the Church to “pull into our day” the Millennial Kingdom nor is there a promise that the Church can “call into being that which does not exist” in relation to His Coming Kingdom.  That is abject false teaching.  The future is not now and it does not belong to us in terms of the Millennium.  The future belongs to God and only He knows the day and hour of the Rapture and the return of Christ and His bride.

All of the promises He reveals to us will be realized in time, but the acceleration of events is largely determined by the desperation of God’s people. (Bill Johnson, The Physics of Heaven, Chapter 16: Pulling the Tomorrows of God into Today, http://heavensphysics.com/chapter16/)

There is no such thing as an acceleration of the Millennial Kingdom.  However there will be a great falling away, and apostasy, before the Rapture.  There is no such thing as an end time worldwide revival or awakening prophesied in Scripture.  This kind of statement by Johnson, along with those who teach Latter Rain heresy, is simply posturing and wishful thinking.  It is a way to try to “hook” people into becoming their followers instead of students of the Word.

Word of Faith

At 1:02 in the video, Bill Johnson says,

“You can only give away what you have. Can God give away sickness? No, he’s not sick. You can’t give cancer if you don’t have it.” (Bill Johnson, Video clip, http://web.archive.org/watch?v=FYA7ZkkutPw)

This is one of the more ridiculous teachings by Johnson.  God, being infinite and perfect, of course, cannot get sick.  But that doesn’t mean we cannot, and the Bible says that the Lord allows us to be sick or disabled for His own purposes.  God allowed Paul to be sick to that he would have to spend more time in Ephesus, where many were saved and from which he wrote some of his Holy Spirit inspired letters.  Also, God can do anything He wills. We are not in charge of God.  We simply need to trust Him that whatever he allows to come our way we trust in him.  Look at Job.  This unbiblical Word of Faith teaching has caused many to fall away.  We don’t make false promises as true believers. According to the Bible: Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. For this reason, many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. (1 Corinthians 11:27-30)

Bill Johnson tells us that for the first time in “church” history, we have an opportunity to “grab the concept of spiritual inheritance.” He quotes Luke 11:24-26 about the unclean spirit who goes out of a man then comes back with seven other spirits more wicked than himself so that the condition of the man is worse than at first. He then says:

This sounds like a strange passage to throw in with the concept of spiritual inheritance. But there is a principle of the Kingdom in this passage that is vital for us to understand and that principle is this: We have the opportunity to recover lost wealth of prior generations that was, for whatever reason, disregarded. I have no finger to point or bone to pick. But there were realms of God that were entered into in past generations that were neglected. Who knows the reasons? I don’t even care. All I know is that there are realms of God, realms of past triumphs and victories that the Church entered into that are not a present-day experience. It’s a tragedy because He said, “The things that are revealed are yours and your children’s forever.” (Bill Johnson, “Recovering Spiritual Inheritance,” The Physics of Heaven, Op. Cit., p. 35.)

We have not inherited material wealth, certainly not as evidenced in Luke 11.  Also, the verse he is quoting about the “children’s inheritance” is from Joshua 14:9.

So Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land on which your foot has trodden will be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have followed the Lord, my God, fully.’

As usual, New Apostolic and Word of Faith teachers love to yank passages out of the Old Testament meant for Israel and willy-nilly apply them to the Gentile church.  The Church has not replaced Israel and that promise will see its fruition starting in the Millennial Kingdom.

Third Wave Manifestations

Bill Johnson speaks regarding the “Glory Cloud” citing Isaiah 60:2.

Here’s what the Lord says. He says, “His glory will be seen upon you.” [laughter, cheers] His glory will be seen—will be seen. The context is Isaiah 60, the darkness comes to the earth—deep darkness to people, but His light will appear upon you, His glory will be seen upon you. The contrast is unbelievers will see the presence manifested on the earth. [applause] I honestly feel like He’s trying to get us ready for stuff. I feel like He’s wanting to get us ready for how He, I’ve just got this sneaking suspicion He’s about to surprise all of us. Maybe scare us a little bit, you know. It’s really a big deal to me that we have things happen from the Lord that we don’t understand, can’t explain, and cannot control. And to me, that’s a healthy thing. It says “His glory will be seen upon you.” Turn to somebody and prophesy over them, “the glory of God’s going to be visible upon you.” Two very big problems here: 1) No one can on the spur of the moment at the command of another, prophesy something. True prophecy comes at the behest of the Holy Spirit whom we cannot control; (Bill Johnson, “Recovering Spiritual Inheritance,” The Physics of Heaven, Op. Cit., p. 35.)

First of all, Johnson orders his followers to prophesy then immediately tells them no one can command someone to prophesy.  Which is it?  I guess it doesn’t matter that you live in the oxymoronic world of postmodernism, but what He says does matter to those who think logically using the brain God created in them.  The context in which Johnson couched Isaiah 60:2 is entirely wrong. It is a millennial promise to Israel when they will be brought into the Land of Promise, and the Gentiles will come to them. Read Isaiah 59:19 – 60:5 for the full context.

On many occasions laughter has filled a room, bringing, healing to broken hearts. Gold dust sometimes covers people’s faces, hands, or clothing during worship or ministry time. Oil sometimes appears on the hands of His people, and it especially happens among children. A wind has come into a room with no open windows, doors, vents, etc. At some locations, believers have seen an actual cloud of His presence appearing over the heads of worshiping people. We’ve also had the fragrance of heaven fill a room. . . . I have seen the small gems that suddenly appeared in people’s hands as they worshiped. Since early in 1998 we have had feathers fall in our meeting. . . . They [feathers] now fall most anywhere we go—airports, homes, restaurants, offices, and the like. (Bill Johnson, When Heaven Invades Earth: A Practical Guide to a Life of Miracles.,159–60)

These claims have been tested.  The gold dust turns out to be stationary glitter (see A Whole Lot Of Wishful Thinking These Days , It's "Glory Dust" And "Manna" In The Apostate Church, Gold Fever Strikes) the angel feathers turn out to be a species of earthly bird (Feathers from Heaven?) the “glory cloud” is some dusty substance introduced into the air ducts, etc.  These are decades old tactics used in Pentecostal churches to impress on their people that God has really blessed their churches.  These are no blessings from this god but false signs and wonders.  God blesses His people by teaching them and growing them to maturity, not teaching them to suspend their God-given minds.

Portal Ascendency

There are all kinds of talk about “portals” today.  Maybe they have watched too many episodes of Stargate SG-1.

[0:24]…I want to pick up where we kind of left off here a few weeks ago…the series that I started about the Throne life, the ascended lifestyle… Jesus stood before His disciples, before Nicodemus in John chapter 3, and He made this statement, He said, “No one has ASCENDED into heaven except He that descended” [John 3:13].  Now, this is before His death, before His Resurrection; so He was describing here a lifestyle of intimacy with the Father where even though He was standing on earth He had ascended into heavenly realms in His relationship with God.  The point being, that is an invitation for every believer… [1:52]  (Bill Johnson, “Thinking from the Throne” podcast, June 9, 2013)

First of all, the implication is that we can choose to “ascend”.  But only Christ has ascended and no one in the history of mankind for over 2000 years has done that.  It will take Christ’s “harpazo” for us to be resurrected and ascend.  Again it sounds like an episode of Stargate.  We don’t become ascended beings when we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ unto salvation.  We do not ascend because He chose to descend.  He will physically ascend us when we die in spirit to heaven, or when He Raptures us and joins our born again spirit with a new ascended body and mind.  We cannot physically ascend now, not even with wishful thinking.  Spiritually we are with Christ in heaven as he continually makes intercession with the Father, but we will not actually be with him until the Resurrection.

What would it feel like to be embraced by God? What would it feel like to become aware of how deeply you are loved by your Divine Source? It is possible to experience this! You can have a direct personal experience to feel the love your Creator has for you and to grow into the body experience of feeling the love you crave.  Spirit has the capacity to relate to us in any way we need and want. Relating to God as an energy force or love is certainly one approach to higher consciousness. Love, however, is best experienced in personal relationships–for example, you cannot get love from a thing, only another person. We can know God through our hearts simply by wanting a personal relationship. This opens the portal for Spirit to fill us with the love and acceptance we need that we did not get as children or in our adult relationships. (Bill Johnson, “Thinking from the Throne” podcast, June 9, 2013)

Nothing about the new birth is mentioned here, only some metaphysical “experience”.  What Third Wavers always do is try to make the occult experience called “slain in the spirit” an experience of God.  It is actually a soulical experience, if not a demonic one.  Since it is unbiblical the enemy comes in and seduces people by overwhelming their emotions and bodies with sensations.  But the greatest evil is not the experiences he is doling out, but the softening up of people to false teachings like the one above.  If he can get a person to change their belief system to include another Jesus, a different spirit and/or a different gospel, he knows they will abandon what they have been taught and fall away.  He knows he can get people to “believe in vain”.

1 Corinthians 15:2 by which also you are saved if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

Manchild Higher Consciousness

Once one reaches the full manifestation of a son of God, aka Master, through “higher consciousness” (by a “lifestyle of intimacy with the Father”?), one can, like the title of this podcast, ‘think from the Throne of God’. In typical Latter Rain fashion, he is looking for full unity, by proof-texting Ephesians 4:13:

[36:30]…until we all come to the unity of faith and the KNOWLEDGE of the SON of God.  Too many people think they know that don’t know.  So the knowledge of the Son of God, to “A perfect man”.  Look at the description.  Millions and millions of body members come to “A” – singular – perfect mana full-on revelation of the Person of Jesus, what He is like, how He is.  To “A perfect man”, to the measure and stature – an equal measure to the fullness of Christ… [37:34] (Bill Johnson, “Thinking from the Throne” podcast, June 9, 2013)

John Gill says this on Eph. 4:13:  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, &c.] These words regard the continuance of the Gospel ministry in the church, until all the elect of God come in: or "to the unity of the faith"; by which is meant, not the union between the saints, the cement of which is love; nor that which is between Christ and his people, of which his love, and not their faith, is the bond; but the same with the "one faith", # Eph 4:5 and designs either the doctrine of faith, which is uniform, and all of a piece; and the sense is, that the ministration of the Gospel will continue until the saints entirely unite in their sentiments about it, and both watchmen and churches see eye to eye: or else the grace of faith, which as to its nature, object, author, spring, and cause, is the same; and it usually comes by hearing; and all God’s elect shall have it; and the work and office of the ministry will remain until they are all brought to believe in Christ;

Unity of the Faith is unity in doctrine.  Heretics divide the churches based on false doctrine.  Therefore it is ironic that Johnson misuses the very passage that spells out how to have unity of the Faith since he is destroying it.  There is no way to become complete in Christ with these types of teachings.

Equivalent to Christ Himself, these fully manifested sons of God, as collectively ONE perfect man, in which Christ is “on earth again THROUGH [these] yielded people”.  This sounds eerily close to the New Age / New Spirituality doctrine that “the Christ” – in actuality the antichrist (or antichrist spirit) – will manifest himself through many different people at one time:

Eventually, there will appear the Church Universal, and its definite outlines will appear towards the close of this [20th] century…This Church will be nurtured into activity by the Christ [ED: Satan/antichrist] and His disciples when the outpouring of the Christ principle, the true second Coming, has been accomplished.20 The Christ, when He comes into incarnation, will most likely project himself into many parts and be where he wants to be. This is called the Law of Divisibility, a term used in Agni Yoga that means a highly developed spirit—one who is able to contact, simultaneously, various people in various locations. For example, a Master can be seen in various groups at the same time. He can even be in different planes serving and teaching on different levels to meet the various needs of the people. He can do different jobs in different places at one time.21 (Bill Johnson, “Thinking from the Throne” podcast, June 9, 2013)

This is not how Jesus will come again.  He will not split himself into tiny pieces but will come as the triumphant King of Kings.

Rev. 19:11-16 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness, He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will [d]rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the [e]wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

Notice how Johnson is quoting from Agni Yoga as a basis for this ridiculous teaching.  Do I have to wonder when the last time was that Johnson read his Bible?  Again, Johnson’s description of the “law of divisibility” is exactly what Maitreya claims will be done when he shows up on the world stage.

Off The Map

The “off the map” teaching is a favorite of Brian McLaren, who Johnson is obviously reading.  You can read about these ideas here: http://www.deceptioninthechurch.com/orrel46.pdf

“None of us has a full grasp of Scripture, but we all have the Holy Spirit. He is our common denominator who will always lead us into truth. But to follow Him, we must be willing to follow off the map—to go beyond what we know. ” (Bill Johnson "When Heaven Invades Earth, A Practical Guide to a Life of Miracles)

The map is obviously the Bible.  Yet we are not to go beyond what is written, add or subtract from Scripture.

1Co 4:6 Now, brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, "Do not go beyond what is written." Then you will not take pride in one man over against another.

Neo-Gnostics like Bill Johnson are quick to favor “new revelation” over the Bible.  And yet the Bible is the final revelation and we are not to add or take away from what is written there.

Proverbs 30:6  Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar. (NIV)
Rev. 22:18-19  I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. (NIV)

Any true revelation can only come by not going beyond what is written and being true to the character and revelation of God in the Bible.

“It’s difficult to expect the same fruit of the early church when we value a book they didn’t have more than the Holy Spirit they did have. It’s not Father, Son, and Holy Bible.” (Bill Johnson, YouTube video: "Friendship With God" https://youtu.be/P4RZ_ctiwlE)

Apparently, Johnson is also not a student of history.  The early church did have the Old Testament and many were saved because Paul used it to prove who Jesus was.  We can also use the Old Testament to preach the Gospel even though the New Testament fully explains the mystery of the Gospel.  As to the importance of God’s Word, here is what God says about His written Word:

Psalm 138:2 I will bow down toward Your holy temple and give thanks to Your name for Your loving kindness and Your[a]truth; For You have magnified Your word according to all Your name.

Psalm 119:160 The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.

It isn’t that true believers are worshipping the Bible.  They are believing what is written there because it is the very Word of God and will last for all eternity.  It is very troubling how many false teachers put down the Word of God.

Desire

“For many years I misunderstood the biblical concept of desire. Psalm 37:4 tells us: ‘Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.’ Like many pastors, I foolishly taught that if you delight yourself in the Lord, He would change your desires by telling you what to desire. But that’s not at all what this means. That verse literally means that God wants to be impacted by what you think and dream. God is after your desires. The word desire is made up of the prefix ‘de’ meaning ‘of,’ and sire meaning ‘father.’ Desire is, by nature, of the Father.” — Bill Johnson, The Supernatural Power of a Transformed Mind, page 144

First of all, false teachers love to try to redefine words.

Desire is a sense of longing or hoping for a person, object, or outcome. The same sense is expressed by emotions such as "craving". When a person desires something or someone, their sense of longing is excited by the enjoyment or the thought of the item or person, and they want to take actions to obtain their goal. (Wikipedia)

There is nothing about the word “desire” being made up of two words, “de” and “sire”.  God is not there to hand us anything our every little heart’s desire.  God will supply our needs as we continue to trust Him and obey Him.  But He is not sitting on pins and needles waiting for us to desire something.  Nor is He obligated to give us anything we declare with our mouths.  God knows better what we need than we do so true believers leave their desires in God’s hands because He know how to best fulfill them, and in my experience, it is often in ways we would never have thought.

This is just a smattering for the ridiculous and false teachings of Bill Johnson.  The conclusion is: STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY!
