Statement#1 The anointing of the Holy Spirit is transferable from person to person.

(B) False

Every believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit of God gives special empowerment to Christians to enable them to do all manner of things and to be who He wants them to be. This process does not require the laying on of hands. If laying on of hands is indicated in a situation by Scripture and by circumstance, it is to be used as a symbol and witness to do things like commission people for ministry service and to comfort those who are sick. Prayer is the vehicle by which we make our desires known to God. God then answers those prayers in His own sovereign way. God decides who, when and where to fill people for His own purposes. The Holy Spirit is not a substance that can be transfered by human hands in any way. Simon the Sorcerer was roundly rebuked by Peter in Acts 8:9-24. Here is the relevant passage: 9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practised sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, "This man is the divine power known as the Great Power." 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic. 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptised, both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptised. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw. 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptised into the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money 19 and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." 20 Peter answered: "May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin." 24 Then Simon answered, "Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me." Simon's "thought" in his heart was probably that he would have a power he could use to his own ends. He misunderstood that this was not sorcery that the apostles were doing but that the Holy Spirit was doing the work of the Father as they humbled themselves in service and prayer. You cannot buy, barter, or receive and pass on the power of the Holy Spirit. This is not an "ability" that can be taught or transfered. This is one of the great errors of the Third Wave movement.

Statement#2 It is easier for a person to receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit if they stop analysing so much and open their minds.

(B) False

We are not advised in Scripture to empty our minds as many cults and eastern religion groups need to do. Rom. 12:2 "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is his good, pleasing and perfect will." When we are born again, God gives us a new mind. This mind is to be used to find out what God's will is. Mt 22:37 Jesus replied: "`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' One thing that God wants us to do with our mind is to love Him with it. We cannot love God by disengaging our minds that He created. We must love Him at all times with our whole being. Isa 26:3 "You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you." God is not a God of disorder and chaos. He keeps our minds peaceful as we keep our minds steadfastly on Him. We are also to fill our minds with Scripture and the word of Christ. Col. 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God." Don't pray for the "power to come" so you can get this "anointing" as many of these counterfeit revivalists would have you do. This type of prayer is not biblical.Pray always and pray without ceasing, praying always "Thy will be done"!.

Statement#3 The apostles and prophets of the last days are equal to or greater than the apostles and prophets of Biblical times.

(B) False

What an ego-affirming statement, if this were only true. It is not. If there are apostles and prophets today, they had better take a good long look at the apostles and prophets in the Bible whom God used to write Scripture, and realize that they pale by comparison. My advice to these people is: get off your high horse and get down in the trenches with the rest of us, the priesthood of the believers. Jesus humbled Himself to the point of the cross. Many of the apostles were also persecuted and killed for their witness. Whatever happened to humility? I see very little of that today in these movements. In fact, many of the "anointed" of these movements are now subscribing to the "Manifest Sons Of God" teachings which state that apostles are never to be disagreed with or those that disagree are cursed. They also believe that the latter-day "anointed" believers will have attained immortality by the time Christ returns. These are the "humble" servants who are supposedly preparing the way for Christ's second coming.

Statement#4 Those who question or oppose the latter day apostles and prophets are cursed.

(B) False

Here is an article about a false prophet who has cursed a Christian who disagreed with his views: John Kilpatrick - Prophesy Against CRI

Then read this paper: Kilpatrick's Deceitful "Apology" To Hank Hanegraaff

Is this spiritual fruit at work -- the greatest of which is love? Steve Hill followed these pronouncements by Kilpatrick with the statement that "that devil Hanegraaff and all devils like him" are cursed. Statements like that can only come from one source.

Statement#5 Manifestations of the anointing of filling of the Spirit include: laughing, crying, shaking, running around the building, fast dancing, running, etc, followed by collapse; barking-howling, trances, drunkenness, falling out, oinking, being "hot", fanning self or blowing, walking like chickens, high pitched whine reminiscent of a lively horse, mooing and crowing, swimming in the spirit-on the back and also breast stroke style, women going through imaginary birth pangs, loss of conciousness, trying to soar like eagles, hissing and moving like a snake, inability to speak and involuntary body spasms, kung fu-like stances, vomiting in the spirit and holy head-banging, and stripping.

(B) False

I should think after reading the above list this should serve as a wake-up call to all Christians. It is my hope that they will realize that this stuff is not just sort of funny, or innocuous, or weird but basically harmful. These manifestations are the exact same things that are happening in occult situations such as Hindu Kundilini rituals, the Church of World Messianity, and many other occult groups. Now they are happening in your neighborhood church buildings! Manifestations such as these have long been recognized by Biblical scholars and observers of past "revivals" as demonic in nature. I agree that some of these manifestations could be attributed to people "acting out", or playing some kind of spiritual "one-up-manship" game, or the result of hypnosis and hyper-suggestability. But there is also a frightening amount of demonic activity present at these meetings, and the overall purpose of the enemy is being brought to pass by deceiving the very elect, if that is possible.

Statement#6 God used the force of faith to speak the universe into existence.

(B) False

God did not use any such "force" to create the universe. 2Pe 3:5 "But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water." When God speaks, His Word is accomplished by virtue of the fact that God spoke it, not by some Star Wars type force that we can subsequently tap into.

Statement#7 Since we are sons of God what we speak or declare on earth will be brought to pass by God by the force of faith.

(B) False

If you think so, you're dreaming. God is not at your personal beck and call. He is not your cosmic butler. And He did not use some mythical "force of faith" either, so I think you can assume that you won't be able to tap into that force anytime soon. God is not a vending machine where you put in your quarters and out pops the product all neatly packaged. I know you may be tired of hearing this but here goes: have faith and pray, follow Jesus and what He wants you to do and be. Then God may bring your desires to pass in a miraculous way. But it will be by His will for His sovereign purposes, not by any power resident in a human hand or vocal cords. It might be wise to remember this saying in Ec 5:2: "Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few."

Statement#8 The reason for revival today is that God is tired of Christians feeling so icky about themselves and He therefore has chosen to bless His church by throwing a revival party.

(B) False

John Kilpatrick of Brownsville AOG said "God's people have gone through so much in the last few years that they have become stressed out - worn out and burned out." Christians being stressed out? Burned out? I think not. Try going to the mission field for the rest of your life. Try that kind of stress away from a comfortable lifestyle, family and friends. How about suffering persecution for preaching the gospel, which is happening all across the globe to Christians in countries such as China, Indonesia, and the Sudan as I write this? Here's what Randy Clark, one of Arnott's and Kilpatrick's co-"anointees", said about what God is doing by way of stress relief for the modern-day Christian: God decided to throw a party for His people because they "already feel so icky about themselves."(Randy Clark, Catch The Fire, TAV, 10/14/94, audio tape) Apparently Christians don't feel icky enough to devote their lives in the white harvest fields for the souls of men and the glory of their Creator.

Statement#9 God is breaking down all denominational and religious divisions in preparation for His second coming.

(B) False

It is one thing to stand united in the essential doctrines of the Christian faith. It is quite another to stand with any other religion just because they claim to worship God. The truine nature of YHWH God, the death of Christ to pay the penalty for sin, the resurrection of Christ to give us eternal life, the sinful nature of man -- these are some of the core doctrines of the Christian faith. Christ's second coming will be to the delight and rapture of those who believe on Him and who have followed Him, and to the utter disgrace and damnation of those who do not believe that Christ is the only Way, Truth and Life and that He is the only way we can come to the Father. Denominatons are not evil. They developed because human beings are not able to completely hold all truth at once. Denominational distinctions serve to remind us that none of us has all the answers. We are all one body of Christ with different parts. The body of Christ would look rather ridiculous with a bunch of thumbs and nothing else. There is diversity within the body and yet unity under one Head, Jesus Christ. Jesus does not expect us to all be clones of one another -- or, more in keeping with our discussion, mind-numbed robots all spouting the same warmed-over experiential subjectivistic "Minnesota make-em-as-you-go" doctrines that have very little to do anymore with what Scripture actually has to say. And, by the way, the rapture is going to occur in the twinkle of an eye, like a thief in the night. The time of the second coming is not known by anyone except God the Father. The best way we can perpare for the second coming of Christ is to preach the gospel of salvation to the ends of the earth.

Statement#10 Those who have received the anointing are spiritually superior to those who have not.

(B) False

Mr 9:35 "Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all." Servanthood has apparently gone out of style in this new movement. Once you receive the "anointing" all of a sudden you are instantly sanctified. Fast-food Christianity at it's all-American best! No one is spiritually superior who says they are. The act of saying it or acting it is self-nullifying, in my opinion. I think we will be surprised at the number of little old ladies who spent their time on their knees and in service to other people that are given the best seat at the feast of the Lamb. We all have the "anointing". We get it when we first believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. Eph. 1:13 "And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit." 1 Cor. 12:13 "For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free and we were all given the one Spirit to drink." God empowers us to do His work the way He wants it done, nothing else.

Statement#11 The Holy Spirit is both the "agent" and the "substance" of power in the Christian life.

(B) False

The Holy Spirit is clearly the agent of power in the Christian life, but to reduce the Holy Spirit of God to a substance you can mold and dispense at your whim is balsphemy. This is a point on which I believe many Pentacostals have been sorely mistaken for years, and now it has grown into outright heresy in the Third Wave movement.

Statement#12 Feelings are a good way to validate objective truth.

(B) False

Nothing wrong with feelings. God created the capacity to feel. However, feelings are probably one of the most subjective things in the universe, therefore almost useless in validating objective truth. "Man's flesh is inherantly sinful and deceitful. We live in a generation that uses the Star Wars motto "Luke, trust your feelings!". This motto has now infiltrated many churches and their doctrinal views who have bought into this movement. Feelings are good and created by God, but trusting your feelings to validate objective truth is a fool's errand. Feelings can be used by God but can also be manipulated by yourself, other people and demons. If satan wants to win you over to his side, do you think he is going to give you bad feelings? He would be far more insipid than Scripture makes him out to be if he did so. Remember, this is a being who had the audacity to try to use God's Word against Jesus when he tempted Him in the desert. The enemy will resort to anything to try to win people over. Apparently he is succeeding at Brownsville."

Statement#13 If you can find one verse to confirm something you already believe in Scripture, that is enough to validate your belief.

(B) False

Scripture needs to be interpreted in context and in light of who it was written to, when and what the culture was like, as well as other factors. Doctrine is to be developed using the totality of Scripture, not just one selected verse. The Bible needs to be read in order to subsequently develop beliefs and doctrines, not the other way around. Otherwise the Bible becomes just one big fortune cookie machine for false doctrines. The famous example is: take two Bible verses out of context, "Judas went out and hung himself" and "Go thou and do likewise", and you could start a suicide cult.

Statement#14 Positive testimonies are a good indication that God is doing a work of revival.

(B) False

A defining feature of this movement is the heavy use of testimonies. These testimonies are being told to everyone they meet by the adherents of this phenomenon and are being sent to people in the mail and over the Internet. These testimonies are being used to "prove" that this is a real revival and work of God in people's lives. As we all know, testimonies can be a real blessing and a way to personalize our Christian witness. But keep in mind that personal experience testimonies about feelings, inner healings, perceived life changes, and such are subjective in nature (often not independently verifiable). They are, for the most part, based on a person's opinion of something that happened to them or how they feel or felt. A good way to prove testimonials is to watch the fruit of a person's life over a period of time. Do not simply rely on what the person says at the time, but what he does in his life what his actions are. It is easy to testify to something with our lips, but it is another thing to live that testimony. Another "proof" that this movement uses to justify what it is doing is that they point to the fact that a certain person is now a zealous witness in the community. You should always ask yourself the question "A witness to what?" After all, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses and Hare Krishnas are also zealous witnesses. If they are preaching the complete gospel and people are being saved, that is good fruit and you can trust their witness. If, on the other hand, they are telling people that they have received a special "anointing" via a certain person and it changed their life and that people should attend their meetings so that they can get the "anointing" too, then that is not the gospel message and therefore is not good fruit. But fruit is not the only criteria whereby to judge a movement or an individual. The ultimate guage of truth is God's objective Word. Nevertheless, here are some practical guidelines to use and fruit to watch for to verify if a witness is truthful and if his testimony shows that he is walking with Christ: (a) Do they exhibit the fruits of the Spirit? (Gal. 5:22-23) (b) Do they remain under the authority of the local church and its leaders? (Heb. 13:17) (c) Do they obey the laws of the nation and are they subservient and pray for the government leaders? (1 Pet. 2:13, Rom 13:1, 1 Tim. 1:1-2) (d) Do they seek unity within the body of Christ? (Rom. 15:5, Eph. 4:3) (e) Are they peacemakers or do they intentionally cause problems behind the scenes between Christian people who are clearly walking with Christ? (Matt.5:9, James 3:18) (f) Do they preach the whole gospel of Jesus Christ or do they put a larger emphasis on signs and wonders? (Rom. 1:16-17, 1 Cor. 9:16, 1 Co. 15:2, Gal. 1:8) (g) Do they promote themselves and justify themselves by virtue of signs and wonders and subjective testimonials instead of by Scripture? (Luke 15:10, Jn. 12:37, 1 Cor. 1:21-24) (h) Are they proselytizing church members of your church, telling them to come to their church because it is more spiritual? (Gal. 6:2-5) These are some fruits to watch for.

Statement#15 Intercession should be done by exclusively using your personal prayer language, only to worship and praise, not to petition God in any way.

(B) False

When I attended some of the Brownsville AOG meetings in our area, those who came for "intercession" before the meetings were told that the Brownsville "Revival" had found new, improved ways to intercede. They were told to only praise and worship the Lord, to walk around the building liberally using their hands through the air, to not petition the Lord for anything during "intercession", and to use their prayer languages exclusively. When this "intercession" started, those who had already received theBrownsville experience, began to walk about the room, some speaking loudly in tongues or repeating the name of Jesus over and over again. Some went to the doors, the doorknobs, the chairs and every article in the room and drew crosses on each of these items with their fingers. Some walked madly about waving their arms and obviously getting worked up into a frenzy. This is what got them properly prepared for the service later. 1Ti 2:1 says: "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone -" Would it have hurt to pray that the Lord would send non-believers to the meetings? Intercession by definition means: "The act or an instance of interceding. A prayer to God on behalf of another or others." (Random House College Dictionary) To be an intercessor is to be a go-between on behalf of someone else. If one is not allowed to make petitions for someone else, they have been effectively halted from interceding. I am thankful that Jesus intercedes for us with the Father. Otherwise we would be in a disastrous state. What happened to the priesthood of the believers in all this "intercession"?

Statement#16 "Power Evangelism" produces more converts and mature believers than older style "proclamation" evangelism.

(B) False

The "power evangelism" view of the Third Wave "ultimately reduces the power of the cross. Yet it is the message of the cross which is the gospel. The New Testament proclaims the gospel as the power of God in this age. The Apostle Paul states in Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of God for it is the power of God for salvation." In 1 Cor. 1 and 2 we find that the power of God in this age is identified four times with the cross as the manifestation of God's power in this age. By confusing the power of the gospel with signs and wonders, Third Wavers reduce the importance of what Christ did 2,000 years ago and put the emphasis on miracles today. This lack of emphasis on the cross is found repeatedly in the Vineyard material. For example, the Vineyard chorus book has 83 choruses, but 82 fail to mention the cross." True "power evangelism" is what God does when He saves a sinner who responds to the gospel message clearly preached and demonstrated in a Christian's life. "We are told in Scripture to repent and seek Christ, not "signs and wonders". Mt 16:4 says: "A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away." The sign of Jonah is also the message of Jonah. It was a message for the city of Nineveh that it would surely be destroyed because of its wickedness. Jonah 1:1-2 "The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: "Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me." The message of Jonah is that we need to repent of sin or be destroyed. It is an integral part of the gospel message, only that in our day if we repent of our sins and confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and that God raised Him from the dead (Rom. 10:9a), God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins (1 John 1:9) and by His grace He covers our sins by the blood of Jesus (Eph 1:7) and saves us (Rom 10:9b), at which time the Holy Spirit takes up residence in our lives, without the aid of human hands (1 John 5:7-12, Rom. 8:9-11, Acts 2:38, Eph. 1:13, 1 Cor. 6:19-20). Man has a God-created void that can only be filled by being born again and by an ongoing personal relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ." "There is something very wrong and very evil about seeking anything other than Christ our Lord. We shouldn't seek an experience, manifestation, or any type of phenomenon. Simon the "sorcerer" was rebuked by Peter for his evil desire for "the power" to do what Peter and the other apostles were doing. (Acts 8:18-21) The great preacher, Dr. A.B. Simpson said, "You don't need healing; you need the `healer.' You don't need deliverance; you need the `deliverer.' You don't need salvation; you need the `Savior.'" Statement#17 Third Wave theology is firmly based on Biblical principles.

(B) False

"Third Wavers, like many other fringe groups and cult groups, give the appearance of being Biblical, but in reality they are just another group autonomously interpreting the Bible by their own experience and not interpreting their experience by the Bible. We must be careful to excercise Biblical discernment and not be taken in by these myths." Here are some quotes by notable Third Wavers that indicate just how far their theology has strayed away from Scripture:

Statement#18 Christ cannot return to earth until the Church is completely restored to God's miraculous body of expression on earth and the world is predominantly Christianized.

(B) False

This idea is part of the Dominion/Manifest Sons Of God doctrines. Just because the Bible says that the gospel will be preached to all the earth then Christ will return does not mean that the whole earth will be Christianized before Christ's return. The earth is spiraling downhill in both a physical, moral and spiritual sense due to sin. The end of the age is marked by decay, corruption, apostacy, and false teaching in every significant and relevant passage in the Bible concerning the end times.

Statement#19 The fourth dimension is the dimension of faith.

(B) False

This is Paul Yonggi-Cho's idea. Fanciful, yes. Truthful, no. This continues on in the tradition of the Word/Faith movement where faith is a force that God used to create the universe.
